British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
